There’s no denying nail art has been huge this year. In the past, nail colours and trends were so predictable. Now, it’s all about bold designs and eye-catching combinations.
I decided to try out a few of these trends. Ideally, you wouldn’t do them all on one hand, but I’m eccentric like that. It took quite a bit of time because I did these free-hand but you can use tape to make your life a little easier.
(From left to right)
Updated French - This is your traditional French manicure with a twist. I have done this with a nude nail and bold tip or bold nail and bold tip (shown above). It’s a fun way to put a spin on a classic.
Frosted Tip - I decided on a subtle frosted tip with a grey/silver combination. If you want something bolder, go for a cobalt blue/silver or red/gold.
Create the look: Paint your nail with the first shade, then draw a thin line at your nail tip with the frosted polish (silver), and use the brush to swipe the nail colour in thin strokes towards the finger. Mistakes are hard to spot with this design, so it’s surprisingly easy.Angled French - This is another twist on the classic french. I chose to do this with a dark tip and a neutral nail, but this can easily be changed to bolder hues.
Create the look: Paint your nail the first shade, I used a soft pink. With your second colour, instead of rounding the French tip, you paint two straight lines to create the angle.
Half-Moon - This trend has been in the magazines and on the runways. Some might even call it “the nail trend” of 2011. I did this free hand but reinforcement labels (pictured on the right) might come in handy here.
Create the look: Paint your nail the bottom colour (silver in my case) and then let it dry. Place your reinforcement label on the bottom “moon” of your nail and then paint over it with your top colour (dark green).
Check out another example here :)
Glitter Ombre - For those who love everything that sparkles and shines! This is a fun and exciting way to jazz up your nails - not to mention, it’s very easy to do. You can use a few different colours of glitter, but I did this with gold only.
Create the look: Paint a strip of gold at the end of your nail. When that dries, paint another strip, make sure it’s thicker than the first. When that dries, paint the last strip, the thickest of them all. Tah-dah! Glitter ombre nails!

Christopher Bailey, Chief Creative Officer of Burberry, has done it again.
He catapulted the Burberry brand when he introduced the first ever live stream runway show in 2009. Shortly after, he took over Burberry’s Twitter account. By integrating digital technology and social media, Burberry is now seen as a leading edge fashion brand.
This time around, Christopher Baily is utilizing social media and inviting all Burberry Facebook fans to try a sample of their new fragrance. He’s proving that Burberry is making their mark once again - if 8 million fan’s isn’t a strong social media presence, I don’t know what is.
Feather extensions are the hottest hair trend at the moment. From vibrant feathers to subtle hues, we’re spotting these tucked into manes everywhere.
At a recent preview at Brill Communications, I had a few feathers put in by Donato Salon and Spa. They used SHE Feather Extensions by SocapUSA. These extensions were bonded to your hair with a keratin bond, which won’t damage your own hair and lasts from 3-6 months. The extensions can be washed, curled and styled to your liking. Prices start at $15 a feather and the installation costs $10 for up to three feathers.
I had three installed: neon green, purple and brown. The purple and brown were very subtle and could only be seen in the right light. The neon green was bold and vibrant and received compliments from all angles.
They aren’t for everyone, but they’ll definitely add a chic bohemian touch to your hair.
For more information or to get a few feathers of your own, check out Donato.ca.

When you leave your hair decisions with Jon (of Evoke Salon) and I, we’re going to do what’s best.
Hair is an accessory that can complete your look or weigh you down. Although Mel has healthy hair, her length and style didn’t do much for her, so Jon and I took it upon ourselves to be charitable - with her hair.
In the end, she didn’t hate us…completely (but it took some convincing). Her new cut is fresh, modern and suits her perfectly. Don’t you agree? Or would you disown me as a friend?

Last night, @Nurse_Jo and I attended the launch of hAiRT, a multimedia art show presented by @HairontheAvenue. They launched a three minute film, titled Hazel, shot and directed by Peter Tamlin, which features the dark and seductive side of Fall/Winter11 hair trends. They also showcased top hair trends on four gorgeous models who were styled by Rac Boutique.
Hair on the Avenue is magnificent space (before this, I hadn’t stepped foot into the salon - I know, I need to get out more). It was a fantastic launch with beautiful art and a stunning crowd.
